OK so its about time I informed you of what I’ve been up to for the past few weeks. I went on holiday with my family to Benidorm – don’t judge me. Basically spent a week going to the beach or lying beside the pool and at night venturing out to see trogolodytes like Sticky Vicky. After I came back I flew up to Iceland with a few uni chums for a wedding – Scottish-themed funnily enough, so I was looking braw in my kilt!
A great upcoming Icelandic band called Hjaltalín played at the wedding (they knew the bride and groom) and had everybody dancing – even threw in a Michael Jackson cover. After the band, the Scottish crowd got everybody pumping with some Ceilidh dancing – believe me its a fucking riot when everyone is hanging out their tree.
Sorry about the lackage de postage, I’ve been on holiday in Spain for the past week. Not as pasty anymore. Even better though…I’m flying to Iceland tomorrow for a wedding this weekend! BOOYAAAAAAAH! When I get off the plane we’re heading HERE. In the mean time, here are some songs that are really floating my big fat boat.
I’ve had this U’s & I’s and Lullabies mixtape on repeat all day. I’m really impressed. Primary 1 is Joe Flory, a 24-yr olf half-Norweigan signed to Erol Alkan‘s Phantasy Sound label. It’s all amazing but I have highlighted my favourites. The Aphex Twin/Zombies mix is fucking inspired.

Fuck Rumsfeld! Although, he did inspire the titles of these past 2 posts, so… thanks Donald. Originally I was just gonna pile everything into the one post, but that’s just too much for your tiny brains (and mine) to handle at one time. So I decided to split them up Hipster Runoff-style into “mainstream” and “alt” – at least what I consider “alt” anyway, you might have a completely different definition. This posts’ theme is therefore titled “Remixes Of Artists Who Are Alt“.

This may be old but I don’t care – Edwin Van Cleef rocks my little socks! Thanks TMS! Asian Dan recommended ‘Kyouki’ a couple days ago. You see how close my ears are to the ground ? The Tom Deluxx remix is another stormer! If I were to ever remix a song, I’d hope it would come out sounding like this Shoes remix – man when that beat drops it DROPS! Naaam Sayyyin??! Got that from LA Friendly. I should rename this post ‘Fucking Bangers To Bop To‘, especially after these 4 eardrum grenades! Kish from Futuristic Silence has awesome taste, and knows a tyrannosaurus beat when she hears it. You can thank her, then, for bringing to your attention this John Roman remix of Felix Cartal.
You’d be a Mightyfool not to like this IllStM & Zôl remix. See what I did there. Also, I’m really digging this AC Slater remix. That’s a great name for a DJ eh. I’d be Screech. Panoramix rulez. The Twelves are also yet to disappoint me. Weaving slinky disco basslines into their remixes like they own it.

I actually saw Freeland when I was down in Brighton a few months ago for the Great Escape festival. I’ll be honest – I wasn’t impressed! They came on like Kajagoogoo, but with worse hairdos! HAHA! Joke. GRUM can also do no wrong, his remix of ‘Borderline’ is impressive (altogether now “DO YOU FEEL ME?“) but he really shines on his own track Heartbeats. Heartbeats (like VEGA‘s ‘No Reasons‘) will probably be in my year-end top 10 song list. Lastly, Lifelike is a brutha from another mutha who hasn’t slipped up at all recently. Wind down the end of this post with the 80s-indebted ‘Radio 84′ – fuck me it’s even in the title.
This is a collection of songs that have been vying for my attention over the past week and I’ve only recently got round to listening to them. I’ve attached my picks of the bunch. The theme is “‘Remixes Of Artists Who Are Mainstream“. Listen to me, “Mainstream” – I sound like fucking Carles (miss u bro).
First up is Astronomer reMAXing Micachu. Really great stuff this – when I hear it I think of Pyramid Head waltzing down the corridor in Silent Hill. Chilling! Calvin Harris can’t really put a foot wrong with his recent remixes, and his invigoration of the new Shakira single is no exception. Florence And The Machine. Bullshit. There, I said it. Bring on the backlash. I really don’t get the hype around her. She just screams her way through Rabbit Heart. “Raise It Up!” Fuck OFF!!! Yet, this Boy 8-Bit rehash of ‘Drumming Song’ is totally listenable. Mind you, it does go on a bit.
Russ Chimes has increased the tempo of ‘Confusion Girl’, brought the strings to the front and generally livened it up a bit. Like. Luke Solomon joins the list of people (e.g. Aeroplane, Thin White Duke) who can successfully kick fuck out of a Friendly Fires song and still have it come out smelling of roses – well done! Rarche showed me the light with this Fake Blood remix of The Gossip. It was in his top 3 underappreciated for the month of August. I couldn’t agree more. Breaks my ears at 1.30 in. Have I made you proud Rarche??

Lastly but not leastly, more “mainstream” artists being remixed by “mainstream” remixers. Right fuck it, Carles should DEFINITELY hire me. Another Fake Blood remix. As I was putting together this post I noticed how similar the Kills and Gossip remixes were – is this a bad thing? I like the Gossip one better. The Bloody Beetroots give the same Kills track a healthy stab in the kidneys with the synth machine. I’m undecided on this one, like the Boy 8-Bit remix above, it goes on a bit. To be fair, if I heard it in a club I’d probably lose my shit – fickle cunt that I am.
The more I listen to the Death To The Throne remix, the less I like it. I think it originally reminded me of The Postal Service. I’m starting to wonder why I’m posting it. I can’t be arsed deleting it. It’s nice to end on a high note so I’ll send you HERE – my favourite new website. Might even record a ditty and post it. Is that ghey?

The internet is a fast moving beast, so the streaming MP3s that are posted may not work after a while due to them being taken down. And since I can't be arsed uploading them all again it's tough shite. I'll always post a link to a downloadable MP3 though. As always, if you like what you hear - away and buy it eh!
p.s. if I've put up a song you'd rather not see here then let me know, you can email me here
