Just reignited my love for all things White Stripes after being tagged in a long-forgotten photo on Facebook. Believe it or not, in high school, me (as Meg) and Niccolo (the Italian exchange student – as Jack) performed ‘Dead Leaves and The Dirty Ground‘ as The White Stripes for our school’s annual ‘Stars In Your Eyes’ competition. HERE is the evidence. We didn’t win (obvs) but we were the only act to play completely live with no backing track. I ROCKED THE FUCK OUT OF THOSE DRUMS, DALE!
These snaps were taken at 30 Rock (i.e. the GE Building at the Rockefeller Center) on our first night in NYC. Safe to say my mind was blown. I’ll show you the one I took of the Empire State Building another time.
Dem Slackers lucked out on the remixes – pretty much all of them are excellent, I’ve posted most of them below. HUGE drops. Bart B More keeping up the high quality, Evil Nine keeping the late 80s/early 90s rave vibe going, and Clouds pretty much just obliterating what speaker I had left after the previous ones.
I said I’d write a post about the new Deerhunter album ‘Halcyon Digest’ so here it is. Now a contender for album of the year (along with Best Coast, LCD Soundsystem and Gorillaz) I’ve played the absolute shit out of it since I’ve been back my holidays. Just an absolute stunner. A few exquisite tracks (“Revival”, “Helicopter”, “Coronado”) and an instantly forgettable one (“Sailing”), yet the rest are excellent. Indeed, “Revival” and “Helicopter” will probably be in my Best Of 2010 song list also. “Helicopter” sounds like awaking from a dream underwater. Star Slinger was recently featured on P4K’s ‘Rising’ section and he turns in a lovely little remix here.
The photo? Taken at Graceland, in Elvis’ 13.8 acre backyard. I thought the swing set looked kinda sad.
Finally got some of my LOMO film developed – it’s all in random order because I didn’t label the spools or anything. Here’s a favourite of mine so far (from Centennial Park, Nashville), taken on the spur of the moment as well – they’re always the best ones. Let me know what you think of my photaes! Music you say? OK well there’s this guy that calls himself Four Te….. ah but you knew that already – well then you should also know he’s not put a foot wrong lately so you know this xx remix will be good.
For fun I’ve thrown in this disco song by Van McCoy that I heard everywhere we went in the States for some reason. DO THE HUSTLE! Lastly, this great track by a band called Dawes I heard played at the end of an episode of Hung. It went well.
I’ve been back more than a week from my 3-week drive from Dallas → New York and my jets are still lagging! Had an amazing time and visited some astonishing cities, some less great than others. We drove from Dallas to Hot Springs to Memphis to Nashville to Newport to Roanoke to Washington D.C. to Philadelphia to New York City. When I get my film developed (oh that’s right, I took 3 cameras and about 20 rolls of film!) I’m sure there’ll be a few corkers I can put up on the blog. In the meantime, here’s 3 shots of my travel buds taken on Rob’s digital SLR. Oh, and I was gonna do a post about the new Deerhunter album (which has a few stunners on it) but I’ll leave that for another day. First off then, great new track from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs which was played by Annie Mac on her Friday show.
Finally, a track that was played to us when we went on the Sun Studios tour in Memphis. By the Prisonaires, the track ‘Just Walkin’ In The Rain’ was written by inmates of the Tennessee State Penitentiary and this song was eventually released on Sun Records. The record became so successful that they were allowed day-passes out to tour! Ah the power of music…

The internet is a fast moving beast, so the streaming MP3s that are posted may not work after a while due to them being taken down. And since I can't be arsed uploading them all again it's tough shite. I'll always post a link to a downloadable MP3 though. As always, if you like what you hear - away and buy it eh!
p.s. if I've put up a song you'd rather not see here then let me know, you can email me here
