Yeah I saw Foamo last Friday – I know, this post is verrrry late. He rocked Cabaret Voltaire – we were on the vodka Red Bulls all night and ripped up the front row with our impeccable dance moves giving it the big licks. I’d give him an 8/10. He’s new but he’s got potential.
Oh yeah, some bastard hit the fire alarm at about 2.15am. The lights came on, the music stopped, and we all had to file outside. Foamo went out right behind me. There was a chant started on our way out. “FOAMO! FOAMO!” I turned round to Foamo and said, “They’re chanting your name“. He laughed. He understood why.
OK so its about time I informed you of what I’ve been up to for the past few weeks. I went on holiday with my family to Benidorm – don’t judge me. Basically spent a week going to the beach or lying beside the pool and at night venturing out to see trogolodytes like Sticky Vicky. After I came back I flew up to Iceland with a few uni chums for a wedding – Scottish-themed funnily enough, so I was looking braw in my kilt!
A great upcoming Icelandic band called Hjaltalín played at the wedding (they knew the bride and groom) and had everybody dancing – even threw in a Michael Jackson cover. After the band, the Scottish crowd got everybody pumping with some Ceilidh dancing – believe me its a fucking riot when everyone is hanging out their tree.
Fuck Rumsfeld! Although, he did inspire the titles of these past 2 posts, so… thanks Donald. Originally I was just gonna pile everything into the one post, but that’s just too much for your tiny brains (and mine) to handle at one time. So I decided to split them up Hipster Runoff-style into “mainstream” and “alt” – at least what I consider “alt” anyway, you might have a completely different definition. This posts’ theme is therefore titled “Remixes Of Artists Who Are Alt“.

This may be old but I don’t care – Edwin Van Cleef rocks my little socks! Thanks TMS! Asian Dan recommended ‘Kyouki’ a couple days ago. You see how close my ears are to the ground ? The Tom Deluxx remix is another stormer! If I were to ever remix a song, I’d hope it would come out sounding like this Shoes remix – man when that beat drops it DROPS! Naaam Sayyyin??! Got that from LA Friendly. I should rename this post ‘Fucking Bangers To Bop To‘, especially after these 4 eardrum grenades! Kish from Futuristic Silence has awesome taste, and knows a tyrannosaurus beat when she hears it. You can thank her, then, for bringing to your attention this John Roman remix of Felix Cartal.
You’d be a Mightyfool not to like this IllStM & Zôl remix. See what I did there. Also, I’m really digging this AC Slater remix. That’s a great name for a DJ eh. I’d be Screech. Panoramix rulez. The Twelves are also yet to disappoint me. Weaving slinky disco basslines into their remixes like they own it.
The Conservatory (built 1832), Dalkeith Country Park, Midlothian
I actually saw Freeland when I was down in Brighton a few months ago for the Great Escape festival. I’ll be honest – I wasn’t impressed! They came on like Kajagoogoo, but with worse hairdos! HAHA! Joke. GRUM can also do no wrong, his remix of ‘Borderline’ is impressive (altogether now “DO YOU FEEL ME?“) but he really shines on his own track Heartbeats. Heartbeats (like VEGA‘s ‘No Reasons‘) will probably be in my year-end top 10 song list. Lastly, Lifelike is a brutha from another mutha who hasn’t slipped up at all recently. Wind down the end of this post with the 80s-indebted ‘Radio 84′ – fuck me it’s even in the title.
So here it is as promised – the Boys Noize debriefing. Before you start though, click on ‘Click To Play All Audio Posts‘ at the bottom of the screen. Wow. How does that feel? Feeling woozy yet? Yeah thats exactly what my brain sounded like as I was trying to get to sleep after seeing Boysy Noizey! We’d had it planned for a while that we’d go full NEONRAVE stylee, but that didn’t prepare us for when we got into the club. Two minutes after we arrived (literally in the cloak queue) we got asked “GOAT ENNY PULZ MATE?” haha. To be fair, we did look like a bunch of pill-popping eck-heads LMAO!
He played a cracking set, sprinkled with tracks from his new album ‘Power‘ and ‘Oi Oi Oi‘, as well as the odd remix. My favourite was when he played ‘Jeffer’. Me + my crewz all attempted the crazy dancing seen in the fan-made video. Best drop of the night for me though was when the Soulwax remix of ‘Mind Dimension‘ landed. I think I almost exploded. I’d say the biggest cheer of the night was for ‘My Moon My Man‘.
Yeah, thats him in the picture. It’s quite far away eh. We partied til about 4am (Boys Noize finished about 3am) bustin-a-groove to my main man Hostage then left soon after.
BTW Kid Alex is Boys Noize. Alter ego. Three men and a little ego. NapolEgo dynamite. Eternal sunshine of the spotless ego. Ego Vs. Kramer. Big ego in little china. Also, I’ve heard ‘Power’. Good stuff. Very good stuff.
I have a dilemma. My big MSc year hand-in is due on August 20th but I just recently found out The Proxy is coming to Edinburgh! The question is ‘should I go?‘
Of course I’m gonna fuckin go! Gonna get my ticket this week. So excited I could shoot some trees with a machine gun…
I was perusing the RAKETA blog (well, as much perusing you can do when you can’t read Russian) and found this really great summer mix from a Russian group called 7he Myriads. I know what you’re thinking. I love the use of 7 instead of a T as well. Aaanyway, was deciphering the tracklist and trying to work out what I was listening to and found this band called Cassette Club (the song in the mix was ‘Living In A Video‘). Decided to check them out for myself (hi google) and discovered that they’ve had literally no blog coverage. WTF!? Songs this good should not go unheard. Well fret no longer my love, help has arrived in the form of a 23-yr old Scotsman. Whodathunk eh?

Number Seven is my favourite out of this selection. Crying out for a remix too.
Lets big-up 7he Myriads, then, for letting us hear this new band. Megapolice sounds like the soundtrack to a 70s car-chase movie (yeah, yeah i know Bullitt was 1968). Really good actually.
I feel like I’ve gone off point.
What was the point of this post?
Two legends of music in one week! Just been to see Duran Duran play at Edinburgh Castle!!! They sounded absolutely immaculate. Congratulations mst go to the sound people because they made the band sound flawless live. And FOMG can John Taylor play. Probably one of the most underrated bassists ever… and what a sweet ass.
Just listen to those walking basslines. No wonder they was friends with Chic. Girls On Film is undisputed excellence. The Relfex is my dad’s favourite Duran Duran song (and possibly mine too). I’ve just googled the lyrics a song I liked but didn’t know what it was. Turns out it was Skin Trade from their Notorious album. Best oldie I’ve heard for aaaages. And it was even better live!
Saw this man yesterday at Hampden, Glasgow. 3 hours. Non-stop. Only knew about 30% of the songs. Who cares. It’s the FUCKIN BOSS!! And he played my favourite song! American Land! It reminds me of Christmas. Specifically an Irish rowdy Irish Christmas Irish party in an Irish bar….only in my dreams.
Yeah, you guessed it. Scottish Friction regular Boys Noize.
..And I’m not gonna be there. Instead of smashing shit up I’ll just let The Proxy completely annihilate this Boys Noize track… in the best way possible of course. It’s not really payback at all, is it. It’s just making me even more jealous.
This Punks Jump Up remix is a cracker. I’d say this and the JUPITER remix of Chew Lips (another Scottish Friction favourite) are the best remixes I’ve heard for, ooh at least a week, which is like a year in blogtime. Plus they sound nice played one after the other
I’ve been to T in the Park twice now (2006/07) and each time was fantastic. Think it only rained a couple of times. Thats me on the left incase you’re wondering – looking like a twat in my Kamikaze bandana and Devo t-shirt hahaha. I don’t care. Look at our faces. We’re practically glowing. Good beer to man ratio. Great weekend.
So excited about the new Jay Reatard album. I think I worn out Blood Visions within a week of first hearing it. I even started a Jay Reatard myspace page with my favourite song of his at the time because I wanted to add it to my myspace profile but nobody had it! Hahahhaa. How sad is that. I’ve not been on my myspace for aaages. 6,222 plays though! RESULT! Anyway, I really like this new song of his.
Before I forget I got a great email from the Polaris Music Prize-nominatedElephant Stone. I gave their song ‘I Am Blind’ a listen and I think it’s great. T’otherwise I wouldn’t have posted it. If you like it, apparently the album’s streaming at the Indiecater website.
Bassline at the start sounds a bit like Jackie Wilson‘s ‘Higher & Higher’ eh? And that song reminds me of the end scene in ‘Death To Smoochy‘. You have to see that film. Hilarious.
ZOMFG! Just announced that Boys Noize will be playing City Nightclub on 28th August. Can you believe it??! I only saw him last month! Got my ticket earlier! GIRFUY! Sent out a heowge feeler text to see who was up for it and everybody that has replied so far has been a “FUCK YES!”. This is gonna be such a good festival. Know what else? Clubs don’t shut til 5am during the festival!! I think I need to change my knickers.
Fuck knows why but this song was in my head all day and I didn’t even know who it was by. I remembered it was from a comedy film I’d just watched but I couldn’t place it. I googled the lyrics I could vaguely remember and BANG! Herpes. Just joshing. It was Dumb and Dumber and the song was ‘The Rain, The Park & Other Things’ by The Cowsills. Big in ’67.
I wasn’t sure about the new Calvin-Harris-produced-Chrome-featuring-brand-spanking-new-never-been-heard-before-world-exclusive (I might’ve taken some artistic license there) Dizzee Rascal single ‘Holiday’ when I first heard it. And now I hear you cry? I can’t get enough. Think its because the quality of the rips out there were quite poor. I acquired (LOL) a better version and, I won’t lie, I’ve played the shit out of the little sunny fucker. I haven’t heard it in the club setting yet, but I can imagine from 2.45 onwards all hell breaks loose.
This Don Diablo remix is also very good. This man has cranked out some absolutely storming remixes and its no wonder why he’s one of the most blogged about DJs around! p.s. Check that bass!
The internet is a fast moving beast, so the streaming MP3s that are posted may not work after a while due to them being taken down. And since I can't be arsed uploading them all again it's tough shite. I'll always post a link to a downloadable MP3 though. As always, if you like what you hear - away and buy it eh!
p.s. if I've put up a song you'd rather not see here then let me know, you can email me here
