OK so its about time I informed you of what I’ve been up to for the past few weeks. I went on holiday with my family to Benidorm – don’t judge me. Basically spent a week going to the beach or lying beside the pool and at night venturing out to see trogolodytes like Sticky Vicky. After I came back I flew up to Iceland with a few uni chums for a wedding – Scottish-themed funnily enough, so I was looking braw in my kilt!
A great upcoming Icelandic band called Hjaltalín played at the wedding (they knew the bride and groom) and had everybody dancing – even threw in a Michael Jackson cover. After the band, the Scottish crowd got everybody pumping with some Ceilidh dancing – believe me its a fucking riot when everyone is hanging out their tree.
I’ve had this U’s & I’s and Lullabies mixtape on repeat all day. I’m really impressed. Primary 1 is Joe Flory, a 24-yr olf half-Norweigan signed to Erol Alkan‘s Phantasy Sound label. It’s all amazing but I have highlighted my favourites. The Aphex Twin/Zombies mix is fucking inspired.

Well that’s it for another year. Tonight (I think) is officially the last night of the Edinburgh Festival. It’s been a fucking blast I tell ye! Not least for the total randomness of what you see walking down the street that, as an Edinburgh native, just seems normal.
Washed Out is Ernest Greene from Columbia, South Carolina. Really lo-fi, end-of-summer goodness that I’ve been liking lately. I hear he has an album out soon too.
So I watched the cool new trailer for the new Wes Anderson-directed Fantastic Mr. Fox film and what stuck out for me most (other than the mental stop motion animation) was the songs attached to it. Don’t think anybody’s really mentioned them so far so here you go.
I love how far the internet has progressed. I used to just make these as text-to-speech files. They were usually very vulgar (nearly always hilarious) and filled with in-jokes. TEXT-TO-MOVIE!!
p.s. this is supposed to be me and my flatmate. True story too.
Woke up to find this Housse De Racket remix in my inbox. They’ll be supporting Does It Offend You, Yeah? on their UK tour in October and are playing Glasgow on the 24th. Might try and rock up.
Yeah, you guessed it. Scottish Friction regular Boys Noize.
..And I’m not gonna be there. Instead of smashing shit up I’ll just let The Proxy completely annihilate this Boys Noize track… in the best way possible of course. It’s not really payback at all, is it. It’s just making me even more jealous.
This Punks Jump Up remix is a cracker. I’d say this and the JUPITER remix of Chew Lips (another Scottish Friction favourite) are the best remixes I’ve heard for, ooh at least a week, which is like a year in blogtime. Plus they sound nice played one after the other
I’ve been to T in the Park twice now (2006/07) and each time was fantastic. Think it only rained a couple of times. Thats me on the left incase you’re wondering – looking like a twat in my Kamikaze bandana and Devo t-shirt hahaha. I don’t care. Look at our faces. We’re practically glowing. Good beer to man ratio. Great weekend.
So excited about the new Jay Reatard album. I think I worn out Blood Visions within a week of first hearing it. I even started a Jay Reatard myspace page with my favourite song of his at the time because I wanted to add it to my myspace profile but nobody had it! Hahahhaa. How sad is that. I’ve not been on my myspace for aaages. 6,222 plays though! RESULT! Anyway, I really like this new song of his.
Before I forget I got a great email from the Polaris Music Prize-nominatedElephant Stone. I gave their song ‘I Am Blind’ a listen and I think it’s great. T’otherwise I wouldn’t have posted it. If you like it, apparently the album’s streaming at the Indiecater website.
Bassline at the start sounds a bit like Jackie Wilson‘s ‘Higher & Higher’ eh? And that song reminds me of the end scene in ‘Death To Smoochy‘. You have to see that film. Hilarious.
I’ve been botally digging the work of Alan Palomo lately. First his excellent song ‘No Reasons‘ under his VEGA moniker. Now I found out he’s the one (well, him and a girl) behind the boards of Neon Indian. Wonder if he means Indian as in Gandhi or Indian as in Cherokee. Would be a bit weird to see a Neon Gandhi eh?! BANG. Their website says of them,
“…Neon Indian delivers equal parts synthetic nostalgia, dreampop lullabies, and grinding guitar noise to create something eerier than the sum of its parts…”
I wouldn’t even know where to start. It sounds quite vintage but really new at the same time, like someone’s just dusted down an old Cocteau Twins record, taken away lovely Liz Fraser‘s pipes, added a bit of Daft Punk, then mixed it with Air France/Aeroplane/That crew etc. Probably a really bad description but I don’t give a fuck. They don’t pay me to do this ken.
Got another lovely email today regarding the new Synthetiseur remix by my favourite Australian wunderkinds – Van She. When I saw the email I let out a little squeal. Lets be honest, its got ‘me’ written all over it. How could I not bring this to your attention.
The internet is a fast moving beast, so the streaming MP3s that are posted may not work after a while due to them being taken down. And since I can't be arsed uploading them all again it's tough shite. I'll always post a link to a downloadable MP3 though. As always, if you like what you hear - away and buy it eh!
p.s. if I've put up a song you'd rather not see here then let me know, you can email me here
