Guess who’s playing T in the Park on Sunday…

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Yeah, you guessed it. Scottish Friction regular Boys Noize.
..And I’m not gonna be there. Instead of smashing shit up I’ll just let The Proxy completely annihilate this Boys Noize track… in the best way possible of course. It’s not really payback at all, is it. It’s just making me even more jealous.

At least there’s no one else there worth seeing eh…….Wait…… WHAT??!?

Yup. Thats right. It’s like the Holy Trinity. Back-to-back FFS!

Listen: Tiga – Beep Beep Beep (Punks Jump Up Remix)
MP3: Tiga – Beep Beep Beep (Punks Jump Up Remix)

This Punks Jump Up remix is a cracker. I’d say this and the JUPITER remix of Chew Lips (another Scottish Friction favourite) are the best remixes I’ve heard for, ooh at least a week, which is like a year in blogtime. Plus they sound nice played one after the other :)

I’ve been to T in the Park twice now (2006/07) and each time was fantastic. Think it only rained a couple of times. Thats me on the left incase you’re wondering – looking like a twat in my Kamikaze bandana and Devo t-shirt hahaha. I don’t care. Look at our faces. We’re practically glowing. Good beer to man ratio. Great weekend.

Here We Are

So excited about the new Jay Reatard album. I think I worn out Blood Visions within a week of first hearing it. I even started a Jay Reatard myspace page with my favourite song of his at the time because I wanted to add it to my myspace profile but nobody had it! Hahahhaa. How sad is that. I’ve not been on my myspace for aaages. 6,222 plays though! RESULT! Anyway, I really like this new song of his.

Before I forget I got a great email from the Polaris Music Prize-nominated Elephant Stone. I gave their song ‘I Am Blind’ a listen and I think it’s great. T’otherwise I wouldn’t have posted it. If you like it, apparently the album’s streaming at the Indiecater website.

Bassline at the start sounds a bit like Jackie Wilson‘s ‘Higher & Higher’ eh? And that song reminds me of the end scene in ‘Death To Smoochy‘. You have to see that film. Hilarious.

Friday, July 10th, 2009

ZOMFG! Just announced that Boys Noize will be playing City Nightclub on 28th August. Can you believe it??! I only saw him last month! Got my ticket earlier! GIRFUY! Sent out a heowge feeler text to see who was up for it and everybody that has replied so far has been a “FUCK YES!”. This is gonna be such a good festival. Know what else? Clubs don’t shut til 5am during the festival!! I think I need to change my knickers.

Fuck knows why but this song was in my head all day and I didn’t even know who it was by. I remembered it was from a comedy film I’d just watched but I couldn’t place it. I googled the lyrics I could vaguely remember and BANG! Herpes. Just joshing. It was Dumb and Dumber and the song was ‘The Rain, The Park & Other Things’ by The Cowsills. Big in ’67.

I wasn’t sure about the new Calvin-Harris-produced-Chrome-featuring-brand-spanking-new-never-been-heard-before-world-exclusive (I might’ve taken some artistic license there) Dizzee Rascal single ‘Holiday’ when I first heard it. And now I hear you cry? I can’t get enough. Think its because the quality of the rips out there were quite poor. I acquired (LOL) a better version and, I won’t lie, I’ve played the shit out of the little sunny fucker. I haven’t heard it in the club setting yet, but I can imagine from 2.45 onwards all hell breaks loose.

This Don Diablo remix is also very good. This man has cranked out some absolutely storming remixes and its no wonder why he’s one of the most blogged about DJs around! p.s. Check that bass!

Brodinski Loves To Slowdance

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

I’ve been so busy lately I’ve not had a chance to update this but I’ll give it a go. I saw Brodinski last Friday at Sugarbeat!!! He played an absolute stormer. I was supoosed to meet my flatemate there but he eventually couldn’t get in due to his friend being gloriously inebriated (i.e. steamin’!). Nevermind though, the night had a turn up for the books when I met a couple of old/new friends and had a total blast. I think I may have found new gig buddies. Oh yeah, and he dropped this bomb…

Complete change of tone for Bibio. This summery pluckfest (and his album for that matter) has been hogging my eardrums this week. Lovers’ Carvings hooked me within the first 5 seconds.

This Don Diablo remix of Frankmusik‘s ‘Confusion Girl’ is just a really great remix/rework of a so-so song. Kind of like that Duke Dumont remix (read: total annihilation) of Lily Allen‘s ‘The Fear’.

Finally, apart from Bibio, the Cryptonites‘ ‘Night Drive Mixtape’ has been on basically non-stop. Really really good mix and exactly my kind of taste at this very moment!! I’ve taken the liberty of posting a couple of tracks from the mixtape because they’re very good.

“Goethe’s final words: ‘More light’. Ever since we crawled out of that primordial slime, that’s been our unifying cry: ‘More light’. Sunlight. Torchlight. Candlelight. Neon. Incandescent. Lights that banish the darkness from our caves, to illuminate our roads, the insides of our refrigerators. Big floods for the night games at Soldier’s field. Little tiny flashlights for those books we read under the covers when we’re supposed to be asleep. Light is more than watts and candles. Light is metaphor.” Chris Stevens, Northern Exposure (1990)

Every Generation Thinks It’s The End Of The World

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

I posted previously on what I got up to on Friday, but I didn’t mention what else I got up to at the weekend, and it ended up being one of the best weekends I can remember. Only recently started listening to Little Boots. This song sounds very 2009! I like it.

princes street gardens

(Princes St. Gardens, Edinburgh)

I think I should start by saying that the weather played a big part in what made this weekend great. It was a scorcher. ALL weekend. It’s a big deal because Scotland’s average weather usually consists of dull clouds, spitting rain and a gale force headwind. Why have I only heard about this Van She remix now? This sounds like the scene from Babel when the deaf Japanese girl goes into the club. Awesome!
Listen: Das Pop – Underground (Van She Tech Remix)

It started off with a bang when me and the dirty proddy saw both The Horrors (King Tut’s, Glasgow) and Boys Noize (Cab Vol, Edinburgh) in the same night. There was frantic trian-catching, bassist-slagging and hero-worshipping (Mr. Noize obv.) that night – along with the stonking heatwave. The dirty-prod just had holiday vaccinations too so he couldn’t drink, so I was the only one on the sauce. Made for some good photos though. Van She‘s band stuff is very good too. I like this song.

Ross Fountain looking up at Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh

Saturday morning. Hungover. Went to TK Maxx with the presbyterian(+ the one from blackpool) for a pair of sunglasses and ended up buying 2 because I couldn’t decide which suited me more. We literally spent about 3 hours in that fucking place. Fuck knows how. After that we hung out on the meadows then went to Halifax’s for dinner (+Britain’s Got Talent final) and met a great medic called Mungo. We all then went out to the Peartree til closing, and on to Shanghai (the club, not the city). Do do, do do do do, JAWS. It’s looking more and more like Wilco‘s new album is gonna be my ‘summer album’ this year. These 2 tracks are back to back on the album and they perfectly complement each other. You Never Know is a pumping, sunny rocker to get-your-strut-on to, while Country Disappeared is a laid back late-afternoon affair. Stunning.

footprints in the sand

(Portobello Beach, Edinburgh)

Sunday morning. More hungover. Organised a trip to Portobello beach for a BBQ. There was about 10 of us in total, all tucking into burnt sausages and a massive game of frisbee. Great laugh. After about 5 hours in the sun, we packed up and got a DiRollo’s icecream. That night most of us went to a pub quiz at the Merlin. Came 3rd. Took goofy photos of ourselves. It was the Irish man’s last weekend in Edinburgh too, and I think it capped off one of those weekends where you just don’t want to back to work on Monday. I haven’t seen ‘Up‘ yet but I just know I’m gonna love it. The trailer had me laughing. The soundtrack is fantastic. I love soundtracks. I especially love songs like ‘Carl Goes Up’. You don’t even have to see the film to tell that this piece of music will be played when the house is lifted from its foundations and balloons into the sky. Now that’s composing.
