The Invisible Support Band

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

OK quick catch-up. I went to see Micachu on Saturday at Sneaky Pete’s, Edinburgh. I won’t lie – I was actually really disappointed with their set, and wouldn’t recommend them live. However, the night wasn’t a total loss, as the support band was recently Mercury-music-prize-nominated The Invisible. I can’t tell you how amazing they were.

I can hear why people compare them to TV On The Radio – and, I admit, I was one of those who brushed them off as merely copycat bastards. But seeing them live completely changed my opinion. Highly recommended. And yes, they blew Mica-shite off the stage. Harsh. I still like her album though. :P

It’s a shame, because these MP3s (and their album for that matter) don’t do them justice.

Known Knowns – Things We Know That We Know

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

This is a collection of songs that have been vying for my attention over the past week and I’ve only recently got round to listening to them. I’ve attached my picks of the bunch. The theme is “‘Remixes Of Artists Who Are Mainstream“. Listen to me, “Mainstream” – I sound like fucking Carles (miss u bro).

astronomer

First up is Astronomer reMAXing Micachu. Really great stuff this – when I hear it I think of Pyramid Head waltzing down the corridor in Silent Hill. Chilling!
Calvin Harris can’t really put a foot wrong with his recent remixes, and his invigoration of the new Shakira single is no exception.
Florence And The Machine. Bullshit. There, I said it. Bring on the backlash. I really don’t get the hype around her. She just screams her way through Rabbit Heart. “Raise It Up!” Fuck OFF!!! Yet, this Boy 8-Bit rehash of ‘Drumming Song’ is totally listenable. Mind you, it does go on a bit.

dream girl

Russ Chimes has increased the tempo of ‘Confusion Girl’, brought the strings to the front and generally livened it up a bit. Like.
Luke Solomon joins the list of people (e.g. Aeroplane, Thin White Duke) who can successfully kick fuck out of a Friendly Fires song and still have it come out smelling of roses – well done!
Rarche showed me the light with this Fake Blood remix of The Gossip. It was in his top 3 underappreciated for the month of August. I couldn’t agree more. Breaks my ears at 1.30 in. Have I made you proud Rarche??

Lastly but not leastly, more “mainstream” artists being remixed by “mainstream” remixers. Right fuck it, Carles should DEFINITELY hire me. Another Fake Blood remix. As I was putting together this post I noticed how similar the Kills and Gossip remixes were – is this a bad thing? I like the Gossip one better.
The Bloody Beetroots give the same Kills track a healthy stab in the kidneys with the synth machine. I’m undecided on this one, like the Boy 8-Bit remix above, it goes on a bit. To be fair, if I heard it in a club I’d probably lose my shit – fickle cunt that I am.
The more I listen to the Death To The Throne remix, the less I like it. I think it originally reminded me of The Postal Service. I’m starting to wonder why I’m posting it. I can’t be arsed deleting it. It’s nice to end on a high note so I’ll send you HERE – my favourite new website. Might even record a ditty and post it. Is that ghey?

p.s. this post will be followed by a (much more banging) sister-post – 3 guesses what it’ll be called.
